Barack Obama has branded his successor Donald Trump a ‘demagogue’ and a ‘bully’ in a scathing speech at a midterm rally.
The former president used the insult – meaning a politician who appeals to voters’ prejudices, rather than making rational arguments – at a rally supporting Ohio gubernatorial candidate Richard Cordray.
He did not refer to Trump by name, but instead said: ‘Some things are complicated, when I was president I was confident the American people wanted the truth.

Obama told the crowd in Cleveland that he believes Americans are ‘supposed to stand-up to bullies, not follow them.’
He said the Trump administration had made it harder for ‘minorities, young people and poor folks’ to vote, adding: ‘This is not normal what we’re seeing. It is radical.’

The former president also appeared to take credit for the booming economy – which Trump has long heralded as one of his administration’s greatest successes.

‘They’re still mad, which is interesting. So just remember when you hear about these folks bragging about this economic period, just remember when it started.’
Obama has largely avoided the spotlight since leaving the White House 18 months ago, and until now has largely avoided criticising Trump.
But he has returned to the front line ahead of the November midterms, with polls showing that the Democrats are poised to regain control of the House of Representatives.
