Two-week-old baby ‘rapist’ needs 24-hour protection from other prisoners

A man accused of raping a two-week-old baby is having round the clock protection from other prisoners.

The infant is fighting for life in the paediatric unit at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

Police said that a 25-year-old man was arrested and charged with rape and GBH with intent.

He is being held in HMP Maghaberry, where he is being treated as a ‘Special Person At Risk’.

A source told The Sun: ‘He has been located in a secure unit for his own protection. He is also on round-the-clock watch in case he presents any evidence of suicidal thoughts.

‘Feelings are extremely high, both inside and outside the prison.

The attack is under investigation by detectives from the Serious Crime Branch.

The man’s name cannot be reported in order to protect the baby’s identity.
