Westminster reopens after suspicious package found near Whitehall

Westminster has reopened to the public following the discovery of a suspicious package.

A large area including Parliament Square and Whitehall was evacuated and cordoned off on Monday evening.

However, at about 6.40pm, the Met Police said the area had reopened.

In a statement on Twitter, Scotland Yard said: ‘The police incident in Whitehall Westminster has now concluded and roads in the area are being reopened. Thank you for your patience.’

Officers were alerted to the package in King Charles Street at about 5.20pm.

It led to a heavy police presence in the area during the Monday evening rush hour.

The suspect package was thought to be near the Foreign Office, and the entrance to Downing Street was also cordoned off.

Westminster Tube station’s exits on Whitehall were also closed as police dealt with the incident.
