One person has been murdered and two others are in hospital after a knife attack in Melbourne.
A man went on the rampage in the Australian city and continued lashing out at police officers who were first on the scene.
A man with a trolley could be seen trying to help police to contain the suspect as he continued to lunge at them with his weapon.

Superintendent David Clayton told reporters at the scene when officers arrived they were faced with a man ‘brandishing a knife and threatening them.’

‘Police shot the male in the chest and he is now in a critical condition under guard at hospital.’
Witnesses said they heard a loud bang and car burst into flames on the corner of Bourke Street and Swanson Street on Friday afternoon in Melbourne’s city centre.
Unconfirmed reports from the Australian broadcaster ABC said the man crashed the car, jumped out of it and threw an object inside which set it on fire.

Emergency services said two people were taken to hospital, but their condition is not yet known.

Clayton said: ‘We will keep an open mind as to whether there is any link, it’s very early stages in the investigation.’
Eyewitness Meegan May told ABC Radio Melbourne she saw two police officers trying to tackle a man as a car burned.

‘And then I heard one loud bang. It sounded like a gunshot.

Victoria’s premier, Daniel Andrews, praised the police and bystanders who rushed to help ‘complete strangers’.
‘Thank you to the @VictoriaPolice officers who responded so bravely, and the every day Victorians who came to the aid of complete strangers,’ he wrote on Twitter.
The incident occurred on the same street as a deadly car attack in January 2017 that left six people dead and at least 30 others wounded.
